Established in 1833, Etna Township (originally called Carthage) is one of several towns that comprise Licking County. Etna Township was originally designed at nine and a half miles long and two and a half miles wide; however, a portion of the section was removed in the mid 1800’s and added instead to nearby Harrison Township. Although Etna Township experienced early prosperity given its proximity to the pony express line, its growth was stymied after it experienced an aggressive cholera epidemic followed by a small-pox outbreak in the late 1800s which decimated a large percentage of the town’s residents.

Today, Etna Township is best known for its mysterious "Etna Township Mounds.” These mounds, which have been placed on the National Register of Historic Places, are unique in that they are mainly comprised of sand, and unlike standard mounds, have no discernible tribe associated with having built them, though it has been suggested that the mounds represent the unique work of individuals who had somehow become separated from their tribe.

Etna Township today is an attractive community with many wonderful things in the area to enjoy, including the following:

Licking County Jail

If you are a history buff and are visiting the Etna Township area, you owe it to yourself to take time to visit the Licking County Jail. Designed by Architect, C.W. Yost and first opened in 1889, the historic Licking County Jail is notable for its gothic design as well as its rumored paranormal side. The Licking County Jail is revered as one of the most historical and well known jails in Ohio history and is managed by the Licking County Governmental Preservation Society, which is committed to preserving, restoring, and sharing the historical significance of this remarkable building.

Dawes Arboretum

For the outdoor enthusiast, be sure to stop by the Dawes Arboretum. Founded in 1929, the Dawes Arboretum was inspired by nature lovers Beman and Bertie Dawes. Today the area includes over 2,000 acres and is committed to encouraging the preservation of a wide variety of trees, sharing research, and providing a space for nature lovers to enjoy and learn. While in Etna Township, this is the perfect space to go to enjoy a day hiking trails, spotting native wildlife, and enjoying comfortable spots to picnic in the shade.

Heisey Glass Company

Formed in 1895 byA.H. Heisey, the Etna Township Heisey glass factory soon became well known for their fine qualityglass products, including tableware and delicate figurines. The company later expanded their portfolio and began manufacturing headlights and lighting fixtures until the late 50s, when the factory closed its doors for good. Though the factory has long been closed down, Heisey glassware has remained very collectible and well regarded for its superior quality. To preserve and celebrate this unique work, the National Heisey Glass Museum was formed in the early 70s. The museum contains a significant collection of Heisey glass, with displays containing hundreds of patterns and all known colors of the famous collectible glassware.
