Located in the heart of Licking County, Granville, Ohio was founded in the early 1800s by settlers from Massachusetts. The town was named after the settler’s original home. After the Revolutionary War, Granville began to develop and become populated by Welsh settlers, who placed a strong focus on education being a central part of the town’s civic life. Founded in 1832 and originally focused as a theological institute, Denison University is a private four year college and member of theFive Colleges of Ohio and the Great Lakes Colleges Association. Although the roots of the college were based in theology study, today the institute is focused primarily on liberal arts education. The college was named after William S. Denison, who made an early sizable endowment to the college to help preserve its services. Denison University is notable for the early stances it took in the anti-slavery movement. Today Denison University provides education to nearly 2,500 students annually.
