Oral pathology can include a number of different phases and procedures:

Oral Biopsy
In the event a dentist discovers a growth on the cheek, gum or other oral tissue, he may request to perform an oral biopsy. Although most such growths are benign, precaution is always the best course of action.
There are three main types of oral biopsy:
- Aspirational – removal of fluid from a lesion
- Excisional – removal of an entire lesion
- Incisional – removal of a partial lesion
Depending on the type of procedure, the patient will receive either a general or local anesthetic. Following an excisional or incisional biopsy, sutures may be used to close the area.
Postoperative pain is minimal, although the following symptoms are not uncommon following an oral biopsy:
- Bleeding
- Swelling
- Low grade fever
- Moderate soreness
