Crown Lengthening
Your dentist may refer you to see a periodontist for a crown lengthening procedure. Usually this procedure is needed if the tooth is decayed, broken below the gumline or has insufficient tooth structure for a restoration or crown. During this procedure, excess gum and bone tissue is reshaped to expose more of the natural tooth. Sutures are placed to replace the gingival tissue around the tooth and a band aid material is placed around the tooth to allow the gingival tissue to heal correctly. A period of about 4-6 weeks is needed to allow for complete healing to occur before the new restoration or crown is placed.
