More about Upper Arlington, OH

Founded in 1913, Upper Arlington was designed by William Pitkin, who followed a Garden City plan, which seeks to develop areas that have equal parts residence, industry, and agriculture. This development was halted in 1916 when the National Guard appropriated the area to be used as a training camp for servicemen who were later dispatched to fight Pancho Villa. In 1916, the camp was dismantled and the development of Upper Arlington continued.

Following the housing boom after World War II, newer developments adopted a different character from the original approach to the city, and were comprised primarily of ranch houses organized along normal street grids. Around the early 1960s, Upper Arlington began reverting to the original intent of the Garden City development plan. Today, the original section of Upper Arlington has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
