Acting as county seat and located by the Scioto River, Circleville was founded in the early 1800s by European-American settlers who were relocating to the west following the Revolutionary War. Circleville’s name derives from the layout of the original town design, which was within a circle of an earthwork that was part of a common Hopewell tradition. The original design included the courthouse being placed directly at the epicenter of the circle. Residents opted to alter this approach to the layout of the town around 1830, and sadly all of the original earthwork was demolished, never to be recovered.

The updated approach to the design of the town was completed by the Circleville Squaring Company, who converted the entire town plan into a more traditional squared grid. Today, Circleville has a robust local economy and is home to several large manufacturers, including Ohio’s largest DuPont site, the Seattle-based truck company PACCAR, as well as Aleris, Georgia-Pacific, and PPG Industries. Circleville is best-known today as the host of the Circleville Pumpkin Show, an annual festival that has taken place since 1903.

Circleville Pumpkin Show

The annual Circleville Pumpkin Show festival celebrates local agriculture and holds the distinction of being the biggest festival that is dedicated solely to the pumpkin. The event began back in 1903, when the town mayor decided to host a small corn and pumpkin exhibit to celebrate Circleville’s local harvest. Each year the event has grown in size, and eventually grew large enough to begin including carnival rides and additional events that were organized by the entire town and local businesses. Today, the event kicks off with the traditional weighing of the largest pumpkins in the area, followed by several parades, and finally the crowning of that year’s Pumpkin Queen pageant winner. The event has hosted over 400,000 visitors and attracted people from over 34 states and from several different countries.

A.W. Marion State Park

For the outdoor enthusiast, be sure to stop by Circleville’s beautiful A.W. Marion State Park. These woodlands and placid waters are the perfect escape for those who enjoy long walks in nature or doing a little fishing. The park is also well suited for campers, and contains several well-tended hiking trails and several comfortable spots for families and outdoors adventurers to relax for picnics. There are also various private spots for those who enjoy practicing nature yoga or quietly reading a book. There is also an abundance of native wildlife in the area, as well as plenty of room on the beach for dog owners to invite their furry friends for a swim.

While visiting Circleville, be sure to stop by the award-winning Manchester Hill Winery. Operating since 2011, Manchester Hill Winery features a wide variety of hand crafted wines and delicious ciders. While there, be sure to ask the knowledgeable staff about cheese pairing recommendations.
