Prior to becoming a city, the area now known as Grandview Heights was first occupied by settlers in the late 18th century, who claimed parts of the land and then sold them to new settlers in the region. With the advent of the railroad and an increase in commerce, this area began to develop rapidly. Originally part of Marble Cliff, one of the earliest Columbus suburbs, Grandview Heights, Ohio was settled in 1890. The city separated from the Marble Cliff community in 1906 and officially became a city in 1931.

Today, Grandview Heights contains a fire and police department as well as a school district, although it is one of the smallest school districts in the area.
