Located along the Scioto River, Piketon, Ohio was originally the county seat until 1845 when a local entrepreneur negotiated the seat be moved to Waverly. Piketon is notable for being the home of Robert Lucas, who served as governor in both Ohio and Iowa. Today, Piketon is best known for being the site of a uranium enrichment plant. Although the installation of this plant suggested an economic and population boom, the Department of Energy recently decided to halt the project, which dealt a significant blow to the Piketon community.
Piketon and the local Pike County offer countless enjoyable events and activities to enjoy.
Local Outdoor Activities
There are several beautiful parks and hiking areas to enjoy during your time in Piketon. One of the more popular spots to enjoy is Yocatangee Park, which offers lovely ponds and several recreational spots, including baseball fields. Located along the Scioto river, there are also several wonderful hiking trails and paths where you can go out and enjoy the local wildlife and scenic views. While in Piketon, be sure to also check out Hocking Hills State Park, a stunning area with hiking trails filled with lush vegetation and native wildlife. Unparalleled in structure and range of natural formations, including gorges, waterfalls, and lush natural woodlands, Hocking Hills also provides an area for a full campground hookup.
Restaurant Options

Historic Mounds
Listed on the National Register of Historic Places and thought to be a combination of Adena and Hopewell design, the Piketon Mounds represent a collection of earthworks located in the nearby Piketon cemetery. The mounds range in size from as small as two feet high to as high as 25 feet with a 75 foot diameter. Although it is hard to place an exact date for when the mounds were constructed, and the construction of the mounds remains a mystery, this is a must stop see and fascinating glimpse into the past during your stay in Piketon. After you’ve had a chance to explore this fascinating site, Serpent Mound is just a quick drive away. Unlike the Piketon mounds, scholars believe that Serpent Mound was constructed by the Fort Ancient tribe, although debate continues as to the true origins. Holding the distinction of being the world’s largest snake effigy, this area offers incredible hiking and climbing trails and a visitor center and museum that offers a rich and detailed history of the mysterious landmark.
