Prior to being incorporated, the area that is now Waverly, Ohio was originally occupied by local tribes that were nomadic and date back to nearly 13,000 BC. Prominent among these early tribes was the Adena, of which there are still traces, most notably mounds that are scattered throughout the region.

As time went on, Waverly developed and was officially formed in 1829. Due to its proximity to the development of the Ohio and Erie Canal, the town continued to grow in population and eventually became the county seat in 1861, which it remains to this day. There was significant pushback from the town of Piketon, which was the original site of the county seat, but a local entrepreneur was able to sway the tide by helping build a new courthouse to the county, which remains standing in Waverly to this day.

In addition to acting as the county seat, Waverly is perhaps best known as being the hometown of thePure Prairie League, a pioneering country rock band that experienced critical success throughout the 70’s and 80s.
