Prior to being incorporated, the area that is now New California, Ohio was platted in the mid 1800s. The town tradition states that the name of the town was given by a man who passed through town on his way to California. A post office was founded around this same time, but was eventually disbanded in the early 1900s. New California holds the distinction of having one of the highest per capita rates of members who served during the American Civil War, a point of distinction that is commemorated by a historical marker.
