Acellular Dermal Matrix Grafts for Gum Recession: Compendium Article

Stoner Periodontic Specialists is committed to bringing the most advanced technology and procedures for treating gum disease and in dental implant therapy to our patients. Our board certified periodontists, Dr. Jason Stoner and Dr. Daniel Murphy, bring the most contemporary treatment options to our colleagues and patients in Columbus, Ohio.

When facing something like gum disease and gingival recession, it is important to know you have options. One of those options is the use of Acellular Dermal Matrix as an alternative treatment option for gingival recession. In a recent article in the popular peer reviewed journal Compendium of Continuing Education in Dentistry, this alternative is discussed, and we wanted to make this available to our patients and colleagues.

The article, “Acellular Dermal Matrix (ADM) Grafts for Root Coverage Procedures Review of Products and Introduction of a New Technique” written by Drs. Jennifer T. Silc and Paul S. Petrungaro provides an excellent introduction into the use of allograft material for the treatment of gingival recession. While the periodontists and hygienists at Stoner Periodontic Specialists do not necessarily promote the surgical techniques the Compendium article demonstrate (as they are more invasive than typically necessary), we do find the body of the work to be a good review of the topic. The authors discuss that many patients who are losing bone and soft tissue through gingival recession do not follow through with proposed treatment plans involving autogenous tissues due to both the fear and discomfort associated with palatal tissue harvesting, and the possibility of multiple surgeries. This fear of both pain and multiple surgeries prevents many patients from undergoing treatment for a serious oral and overall health risk. For these reasons, we feel it is important to bring to the forefront the alternative of Acellular Dermal Matrix as an option to treat gingival recession for some patients.

At Stoner Periodontic Specialists, we pride ourselves on utilizing ADM in the most current and effective methods in order to offer our patients the most least invasive treatments available. Of course, ADM is not appropriate for every case, but with proper surgical technique and case selection it saves many patients from unnecessary pain and discomfort while providing the most aesthetic outcome. If you would like to discuss this or any other questions you may have, please contact us and our incredible team will be happy to help.
