Prior to being incorporated, the area that is now Ashville, Ohio was owned by the Staige family, who built two distilleries on the property in 1812. As time went on, the property was sold and additional buildings were placed on the land, including a grist mill and eventually a depot. Following an increase in population that was brought in by access to the railroad line, Ashville officially incorporated in 1882.
