Named for its rural appearance and located in Highland and Ross counties, Greenfield was originally founded in 1799 by General Duncan McArthur. Other notable people who hail from Greenfield include Edward Lee McClain, who invented the first detachable horse collar, as well as the American Pad and Textile Company, which later went on to develop life vests that were used extensively by troops in World War II.

The majority of Greenfield’s original settlers moved to the area as a response to being anti-slavery. A great deal of this social justice work was done by the Abolition Society of Paint Valley, which worked to educate others on the cruelty of slavery and provided missionary work to families. Many formers slaves passed through Greenfield through the Underground Railroad.

Greenfield also holds the distinction of being the first school in Ohio to have an indoor swimming pool and the site of the first ever African American owned car company. Today Greenfield is officially deemed a village, due to its population being under 5,000 residents. Although the population of Greenfield has diminished over the years, the village is still fondly remembered for its rich history.

Historic Buildings

Listed on the National Register of Historic Places, the Travellers’ Rest Inn, which was built in 1812, holds the distinction of being the first stone building constructed in Greenfield. Originally the inn specialized in serving travelers through the region. The inn was later purchased by the town’s physician, who closed the inn and turned it into a clinic.

While enjoying the historic sites in Greenfield, be sure to also stop by the Samuel Smith House and Tannery, which has also been placed on the National Register of Historic Places. This residence was also built in the early 19 th century and is one of Greenfield’s oldest original buildings that is still standing.
