Established in 1817, Jackson, Ohio was named after U.S. President Andrew Jackson. The town grew steadily over the years and its population dramatically increased after two railroad lines were built that passed through the area. By 1886, the town had several churches, two banks, and several large firms that specialized in coal and iron products.

As of 2000, Jackson has been counted as the largest community within the county. The primary employer of the area is General Mills, which is located in the closely located Wellston, Ohio. “The Apple Tower”, a popular online comic drawn and written by Brian Barnett has cited Jackson as the source of its inspiration.

The Apple Festival

If you are in the Jackson area around the middle of September, be sure to enjoy the annual Jackson Apple Festival, a wonderful citywide event that began in 1937, when members from the Chamber of Commerce decided to promote the county’s apple industry. The festival has taken place every year since. To celebrate, the town hosts “The Apple Bowl” football game the Friday night before the events. Throughout the festival, there are also several parades that take place, ending with the “Grande Finale” parade on Saturday night. The parade draws over 70,000 people and has been dubbed the “largest lighted parade in Ohio.”

Sixth Sense Brewing

If you are a beer lover, you will find plenty of choices and a knowledgeable staff at the Sixth Sense Brewery. Hosting an incredible rotation of local and regional brews, Sixth Sense Brewery is the perfect place to enjoy fine beers and delicious burritos with friends. Leo Petroglyphs

While visiting Jackson, checking out the Leo Petroglyphs is an absolute must. Located next to one of the most beautiful nature trails in the area, and listed on the National Registry of Historic Places, the Leo Petroglyphs contains nearly 40 different petroglyphs that depict unique images of humans and animals. In addition to offering a unique and mysterious insight into the native tribe’s history, the area also offers plenty of nice shady areas available for a relaxing mid-afternoon picnic.

Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve

If you are visiting Jackson for any length of time, be sure to check out the Lake Katharine State Nature Preserve. Located two miles west from Jackson, the preserve stands out for its beautifully preserved lakes and sandstone cliffs, as well as the nearby forest that is filled with Virginia pine trees as well as the state’s largest magnolia trees. The preserve also contains several well-tended hiking trails and opportunities for deer hunts that are awarded annually through a lottery system.
