Platted in 1815 and acting as the seat of Vinton County, McArthur, Ohio was originally called McArthurstown after a general who served in the war; however, the name was shorted to McArthur in 1851. Given its proximity to the railroad, as well as nearby coal and iron ore deposits, it is somewhat surprising that McArthur experienced slow growth. Although the town’s population is still relatively small, McArthur does remain the largest town in Vinton County, which is listed as the least populous county in the state.

Lake Hope State Park

Hope Iron Furnace

During your stay in McArthur, be certain to stop by and see the historic Hope Furnace, which is one of the two remaining iron furnaces that still exists in the county. The furnace was built in the mid 1800s and was primarily used for smelting purposes. During its heyday, the furnace created jobs for up to four hundred employees in the area, who were able to make a livelihood procuring iron. Many buildings were constructed around and because of this furnace, but unfortunately none of the original buildings remain to this day. Despite the loss of the buildings, there are still several remaining artifacts on the grounds which give visitors a rare glimpse into a unique time in Ohio history.
