Founded in 1810, Washington Court House today serves as the county seat for Fayette county. The town has grown steadily over the years, and is unique in having preserved much of its original architecture, with several locations being listed today on the National Register of Historic Places, including Judy Chapel, the courthouse, and several houses owned by early families.

One of the more notable people from Washington Court House is Randall Adams, for whom the documentary The Thin Blue Line was based. Randall was famously wrongfully convicted and sentenced to death for a crime he did not commit. The documentary was hailed by critics and is credited as playing a significant role in Adams’s being acquitted.

For those visiting the beautiful Washington Court House, there are countless wonderful things to experience and see in the surrounding Fayette County area.

The Washington Cemetery

The Washington Court House Cemetery was platted in 1856 and is notable for being a garden cemetery, which is rarely seen in smaller towns throughout Ohio. The cemetery is also the burial site of several historic figures, including Mills Gardner, an early member of Congress. Although the cemetery began to degrade in the late 20th century, the local garden clubs of Fayette County pooled their resources and began a campaign to renovate the area and create a system for continued restoration. Due to their good work, the cemetery’s chapel and cemetery have been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and remains one of the premier tourist spots in the Washington Court House area.

While visiting Washington Court House, there are many wonderful restaurant options to choose from. One of the more popular eateries in the area is The Willow. Founded in 2010, this restaurant specializes in home style cooking and serves hearty portions at reasonable rates. Offering a wide range of dining options, from a perfectly cooked New York Strip to delicious fried perch, it is no surprise that this is a favorite among Washington Court House locales.
