Located in Jackson County (also known as the Little Wales of Ohio), Wellston, Ohio was named after town founder Harvey Wells and incorporated in 1876 following a coal mining boom. Every year in September following Labor Day, residents celebrate their coal mining heritage at the Wellston Coal Festival. The events include karaoke, a giant parade, car and motorcycle shows, and various events that can be enjoyed by the whole family. Wellston is also home to General Mill’s largest pizza production facility as well as several restaurants, insurance agencies, and other sales related businesses.

To preserve the town’s rich history, the local Wellston Historical Association has maintained continuous preservation activities of historically significant buildings, such as the Harvey Wells house, and is also responsible for coordinating a yearly picnic. Lake Alma State Park

While visiting Wellston, take time to explore Lake Alma State Park, the perfect little getaway for the outdoor enthusiast. The park also offers areas to paddleboat, fish, and go biking. Lake Alma is the ideal place to walk around in nature or sit around a campfire with a guitar and hotdogs. Buckley Furnace Historic Site

For the history buff, Wellston’s Buckley Furnace Historic Site is a must see. Located down along two lane country roads, this site offers a remarkable glimpse back to the 1800s when the iron and coal industries were first beginning to develop. The museum contains replicated constructions of the original offices and storefronts. There are also several instructional videos that provide an overview of the smelting process, as well as an onsite guide who will provide a free guided tour and answer any questions you might have. The museum also provides areas for picnicking, so feel free to bring along a lunch for you and the family to enjoy.
