Set in both Delaware and Franklin counties and ranked #15 on Money magazine’s list of the Top 100 Best Places to Live, Westerville, Ohio is a lively community overflowing with history and culture. Originally settled by the Westervelt family, the land that has become Westerville was donated to the Methodist church, which was later purchased by the Church of the United Brethren in Christ in 1846. That following year, that seminary turned into Otterbein College, which continues providing classes to this day.
Westerville holds the historical distinction of being labeled “The Dry Capital of the World” due to its strict laws towards prohibition. This stance on prohibition was not without its detractors, which led to the infamous “Westerville Whiskey Ways” which took place in the late 1870s. As the story goes, a local businessman twice tried to open up a saloon and twice witnessed as the townspeople destroyed his establishments by blowing them up with gunpowder. Given the town’s notoriety for being so staunchly committed to this cause, it is little surprise that the Anti-Saloon League shifted its primary headquarters to Westerville in 1909. Due to the League’s presence in the town and the incredible amounts of leaflets that were printed in support of temperance, Westerville also holds the distinction for being the nation’s first small town to have a world class post office.
Otterbein University
Although a small community, the town of Westerville is the birthplace of several well-known figures, including John Kasich, current Governor of Ohio, as well as American musical duo Twenty One Pilots and actor Steven Boyer. Westerville is also known for Otterbein University, a small private, four-year liberal arts college. Notable among alumnus to graduate from Otterbein is American composer Benjamin Russell Hanby. Hanby wrote many familiar hymns and songs, including "Darling Nelly Gray"; and the Christmas carol classic "Up On The Housetop". Hanby’s home has since been listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is the only memorial in the state of Ohio that is dedicated to a composer.
