Success Rate & Benefits of LAPIP
Peri-Implantitis
Dental implants are a highly successful treatment which can be used to restore missing teeth. As with most surgical procedures there are risks and there is a possibility for the implant to fail. There are various things which can cause implant failure such as poor oral hygiene, complications, other health issues, age, and certain medications.
When a dental implant starts to fail, there can be infection around the dental implant area. This is a condition called peri-implantitis. The condition is similar to periodontitis or advanced gum disease.
Symptoms
In many cases, peri-implantitis is subtle and difficult to detect. This condition is also less common than periodontitis. Patients with a dental implant must practice good oral hygiene with brushing, flossing, and routine visits to the dentist. During these routine appointments, the dentist can typically identify peri-implantitis through x-rays. Below are common signs and symptoms associated with peri-implantitis:
- Bleeding, red, or swollen gums
- Bone loss surrounding the implant
- Implant movement or instability
- Pain or pus near the implant site
Treatment
The treatment options for peri-implantitis are limited and include removal of the implant, conventional bone regeneration, and LAPIP or laser assisted peri-implantitis protocol. LAPIP is the best solution for treating peri-implantitis. LAPIP uses a small (PerioLase) laser to treat the infection and stimulate the regeneration of gum tissue and bone. The procedure also avoids any impact or damage to the healthy tissue. It effectively eliminates the need for invasive surgery, discomfort, and prolonged recovery.
LAPIP Protocol
The periodontist will start the procedure by inserting a perio-probe to measure the pocket depth. The LAPIP laser will then be used to vaporize bacteria and diseased tissue.
Ultrasonic scaler tips are used to clean the teeth, remove build-up and give the LAPIP laser an easier path to target and repair damaged bone. The laser then promotes a blood clot which contains stem cells. These cells form bone and create a natural clot. The tissue surrounding the dental implant naturally heals over time.
Benefits of LAPIP
The LAPIP procedure is an excellent solution for treating peri-implantitis which offers many benefits. When compared to traditional surgery, the procedure does not require any invasive cutting or sutures. It also eliminates the need for bone grafts. The procedure is relatively quick and can typically be completed in a single, two-hour visit.
Patients with peri-implantitis are able to receive the treatment they need while maintaining their dental implant. In addition, LAPIP is more affordable than having the implant removed and replaced with bone grafting.
Compared to oral surgery, LAPIP is far less invasive. It eliminates the need for painful incisions, sutures, and prolonged recovery. Key benefits associated with LAPIP are summarized below:
1. Minimal bleeding
2. Lower risk of post-treatment infection
3. Less invasive
4. No incisions
5. Quick recovery
6. Minimal discomfort
7. Implant removal or replacement is not required
8. Bone grafting is not necessary
9. Success rate of 90% or higher in implant retention
10. Treatment is completed in a single visit
The LAPIP procedure is a relatively quick treatment for peri-implantitis. The procedure takes about two hours and patients typically recover in about 24 hours. LAPIP is highly effective in treating infection and maintaining dental implants. It can eliminate the risk for implant failure and the need to replace a damaged or compromised implant.
